This scripture should bring deep relief to people. Despite what the world will tell you, salvation is not something we earn, achieve, or maintain by effort. It is not a reward for being a “good person.” It is a gift—freely given— by God, received through faith.

Much of our lives trains us to believe that our worth is measured by productivity. For those who spend long hours every day as caregivers, this message can easily seep into our faith. We may begin to believe that God’s favor rests on how well we serve, how faithfully we endure, and how sacrificially we give. But Paul reminds us that it is by grace we have been saved, a gift from God. No man will be able to boast in his accomplishments to make his way to his heavenly home.

Stop striving for salvation, but find rest in God knowing that what Jesus has done we can never do for ourselves. Choose the free gift offered by the Messiah. Be set free from sin. Do not rely on your own strength, consistency or performance. Be joyful in the Holy Spirit creating the fruit of your faith. We are his workmanship and he will be faithful to cleanse us, perfect us, and mold us so that our good works are a witness of his saving grace.

Prayer for today:

Heavenly Father, create in me a clean heart. When I am tempted to measure my worth by my own works, remind me that I can do nothing apart from you. Help me to find rest in what Christ did on the cross and through his resurrection. Continue to perfect my faith so that I reflect your light in this dark world. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
