October 21
I love picking up my teenagers from church. There is always joy and excitement bubbling over, which they can’t wait to share with me. Last week they took a test that helped them identify their spiritual gifts. We talked all the way home about what the different gifts meant and whether or not we were surprised by the results. The most wonderful part of that conversation was knowing that my kids were beginning to understand how the church is supposed to function and how they might fit into that plan.
A different conversation I had recently with a friend came to mind after that night in the car with my kids. My friend had shared how resentment was building against her siblings. She was carrying the majority of the workload caring for their mother. Their family was not functioning as a unit. With a little conversation it became apparent that my friend, like me, doesn’t like to ask for help. We often think the people around us should see we are struggling and jump in to help carry the burden. It isn’t a fair expectation to have for people we love. Thankfully, my friend was in the type of family that was willing to help. They just didn’t realize they were needed. If you find yourself in a similar situation, I have a few recommendations for you today:
Take your concerns to God in prayer first. Let Him guide your conversations going forward. Let’s not allow our tongues to say things we don’t mean in our moments of distress.
Second, realize that not everyone has the same gifts. You may feel comfortable giving sponge baths and medication, but that may not be ok with your brother. Be creative. Maybe he can take care of all the finances and insurance calls that keep you bogged down for hours.
Next, speak up. Find the person(s) that can help you with your immediate needs. After that, start making a plan for long term. Talk to your family to see how they can contribute.
Finally, call your church. I hope you are part of a community that is ready to bring you spiritual nourishment as well as help see to your physical needs. Give them the opportunity to utilize their gifts.
Prayer for today:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gifts you have given to me. Help me to see opportunities to be a good steward of my gift. Thank you for continuing to work in my life and provide for my needs. May you be glorified by all that I do. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
