Daily Devotion 10/05/25
Have you ever been told you are salty? It probably wasn’t a compliment. But it should be and now it’s a goal of mine to make it my Christian testimony.
I believe we miss the implications of salt’s value in a world where everyone has at least three varieties of salt in their kitchen cabinet. Do you understand the important role salt played in the time of Christ? First of all, it is a flavoring. We all know how bland food is without a little dash of the white stuff in there. Secondly, salt was used for preservation of food before refrigeration. You can imagine how valuable that was in a desert climate.
Pliny the Elder recorded that Roman soldiers were actually paid in salt. Many also believe that it is from the Latin word for salt that we get the word salary. I don’t think my husband will negotiate for salt in his next yearly evaluation.
If we look at Luke 14: 25-35, we see the same statement about salt, and it comes right after a teaching about the cost of discipleship. As disciples of Christ, what good are we if we refuse to value our relationship with Jesus above all others, take up our cross and follow him, and to relinquish everything we have? Well, we become salt that has lost its flavor. We are bland Christians that don’t add value to our surroundings. That is harsh but very convicting.
Now, you may be asking how you can apply that teaching to your caregiving duties. I think it hits home that our faith is a lifestyle that has to infuse everything we do. No matter what tasks are set before us, paid or unpaid, “we work heartily as unto the Lord and not for men.” Colossians 3:23
As you go about your tasks today, think of how God would have you behave. Do your work with love and for His glory. Stay salty friends.
Prayer for today:
Heavenly Father, help me to stay on the path you have laid out before me. Teach me to see the opportunities where I can be salt and light to the world. Thank you for continually showing me how to bring glory and honor to your name through the things I do. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
