It took me a long time to realize that there are different types of maturity. Being able to hold a job responsibly or care for a loved one does not mean that you are spiritually mature. The spiritually mature Christian puts faith into practice and is equipped to teach others.

Hebrews outlines some of the things that need to be evident for the believer who has been on solid spiritual food. From their constant practice and training, they have built their powers of discernment and no longer rely on the simple steps of the faith. They have moved beyond initial repentance and baptism. They have tasted the goodness of the word of God and are bearing the fruit of a faith that is fertile and productive.

Where do you stand today? Have you moved beyond your initial acceptance of Jesus’ sacrifice? Did you get baptized as a proclamation of your faith to your community? Do you spend time in the word of God, learning who he is and what it means to follow him? Will you let the Shepherd lead you through every situation, whether it is a valley or mountaintop?

If you are young in your faith—whether as a new Christian or one who just needs to mature—keep learning through the study of scripture. Stay committed to walking with God through the trials of your life, allowing him to renew your mind and purify your heart. Find a mature Christian who can disciple you, moving you beyond spiritual milk.

For those who have been on solid foods awhile, keep learning, but also teach. Pray for God to lead you to someone who needs to be discipled. Commit to sharing the word of God that you have stored up in your heart. Keep running the race set before you and celebrate whenever someone else joins the team.

No matter which stage you are in, we welcome you as a brother or sister in Christ. There is much joy to be found knowing that you are not alone in your faith as a caregiver. We are here to support you, love you, and encourage you. We share your burdens with you as we lift you up in prayer everyday. And we hope you find peace and joy because of the hope that is available only through our Messiah.

Prayer for today:

Heavenly Father, I thank you for your living and active word. Do not let me be dull of hearing, but help me to grow in the grace and knowledge of my Lord and Savior, Jesus. Fill me with your Spirit so that I may produce the fruit of a mature faith. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
