I’ve been putting a lot of thought into what makes a successful caregiving household. It is easy to make a list of attributes that help things run smoothly: caregivers that are well trained; a house that can accommodate medical needs; financial stability. These things all help of course, but they are not the key component. The true linchpin to a successful household—especially one shaped by caregiving—is whether or not the household is centered on Christ.

Inside Christian circles it can sound so trite to say that you have put God at the center of your home. It’s like you are giving the answer you know the teacher wants, even if you don’t really believe it. But you should believe it. You should apply it. It is important to understand that if there is something fractured in this core belief, that everything flowing out of it will be affected.

Colossians 3 reminds us to put on our new self, putting away our sinful thoughts and behaviors. Can you imagine the difference it makes in the home of a caregiver when you “set your mind on things that are above” (v. 2) and you clothe yourself with “compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience” (v. 12)? These things will be evident through prayers shared with family, a gentle touch after fatigue sets in, and kind words when patience is worn thin.

Remember even while you work for your loved one you are serving Christ. Let him rule in your heart and in your home. Sing his praises together and “whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (v.17).

Prayer for today:

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word and the instructions it gives me so that I may honor you with every thought and deed. Help me to build a home that is a reflection of my relationship with you and let me be a testimony to those closest to me. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
